Tokenomics: Understanding the Rules and Uses of Tokens
Tokenomics examines the supply, issuance, distribution, use, and governance rules of tokens, helping newcomers assess how a crypto project coordinates participants and maintains the operation of its ecosystem.
What Does Tokenomics Include?
Tokenomics combines the concepts of “tokens” and “economics,” focusing primarily on a token’s supply, issuance method, distribution mechanism, and practical uses. Each crypto project can be viewed as a small economy, and these rules collectively form the project’s own monetary policy, influencing supply and demand within its ecosystem.
Use, Distribution, and Governance
Whether a token has a clear use affects users’ willingness to use or hold it within the ecosystem. Some projects also give tokens governance functions, allowing holders to vote on matters such as new features, development direction, or distribution rules. When designing tokenomics, the interests of developers, early participants, and ordinary users need to be balanced.
How Code Fixes the Rules
Some of the economic rules of cryptocurrencies are written into code, making them easy to verify. Bitcoin sets a maximum issuance of approximately 21000000 coins, with new coins issued through block subsidies. The subsidy is halved every 210000 blocks, or approximately 4 years in time. What is halved here is the subsidy for newly issued coins; transaction fees collected by miners are not halved according to the same rule.
