Slashing
Slashing is a mechanism used by proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchains to penalize validators for malicious or serious misconduct, typically confiscating part or all of their staked assets and, in severe cases, removing the validator.
What Is Slashing
In blockchains using proof of stake (PoS), validators are responsible for confirming transactions and adding new blocks. Validators must stake assets as collateral; if malicious behavior or serious errors occur, the network may reduce or fully confiscate these assets to maintain system security.
What Behaviors May Trigger Slashing
Common causes include double signing, extended downtime, and surround voting. Double signing means that a validator signs different blocks at the same block height; downtime may affect network efficiency; surround voting involves voting for conflicting blockchains or transaction sets.
How Slashing Works
The network continuously monitors validator behavior. After detecting slashable behavior, it confirms the violation and executes the penalty. The severity of the penalty usually depends on the seriousness of the behavior and may include partial or full confiscation of staked assets; in serious cases, the validator may also be temporarily or permanently removed.
The Role of Slashing
Slashing deters malicious activity and negligent behavior through economic penalties, helping maintain the security and integrity of PoS networks. It also makes validators bear the cost of violations, creating stronger incentives for them to participate honestly and reliably in the consensus process.
