A Beginner's Guide to the Prisoner's Dilemma
The Prisoner's Dilemma shows that when participants each pursue the choice that seems best for them immediately, they can collectively end up with a worse result than cooperation would have produced. It is a classic model in game theory and can also help explain how blockchain protocols use incentives to constrain participant behavior.
Basic meaning
The Prisoner's Dilemma is a game-theory situation in which several decision-makers act according to their individual interests but may ultimately obtain a collective result worse than if they had cooperated. The classic model was proposed by Merrill Flood and Melvin Dresher and later formalized by Albert W. Tucker.
How the classic example works
Two prisoners are questioned separately, and each can betray the other or remain silent. If both remain silent, each serves 1 year. If they betray each other, each serves 2 years. If one betrays the other while the other remains silent, the betrayer is released and the silent prisoner serves 3 years. Individual incentives therefore push both toward mutual betrayal.
Repeated interaction and institutional rules
Participants in real life often meet repeatedly. When the dilemma recurs, long-term rewards and punishments can make cooperation more attractive, while formal institutional rules can rearrange benefits and costs. The point is not to ask participants to abandon rationality but to change incentives so that considering the common interest becomes a rational choice.
Applications in blockchain
Blockchain systems can use this model to analyze incentives for miners or validators to cheat, delay, censor, or free-ride. Protocols use game-theory incentives to make honest participation serve individual interests: proof of work deters attacks through high costs, while proof of stake combines staking with slashing so dishonest behavior carries an economic loss.
