A Beginner’s Guide to Block Explorers
A block explorer is a read-only tool for querying public blockchain data. It can be used to verify transactions, check address balances, browse blocks, and read certain smart contract information. When using one, select an explorer that matches the target blockchain network.
What Is a Block Explorer
A block explorer can be understood as a search tool for blockchain data. After entering a transaction hash, public wallet address, or block number, users can view the relevant public records. It only reads the public ledger, requires no technical configuration, and cannot transfer funds on a user’s behalf, access private keys, or view private data.
What Can Be Queried
Transaction pages typically display the sender, recipient, amount, time, transaction fee, and confirmation status; address pages may show the balance and transaction history; block pages contain the transactions included in the block, validation or mining information, and the time it was added to the chain. On networks that support smart contracts, users may also see contract code, event logs, and token data.
How to Choose and Use One
Before searching, first confirm the target network and then select the corresponding explorer, because different blockchains maintain independent ledgers, and the same address or transaction number cannot be queried directly across chains. Ethereum commonly uses Etherscan,BNB Smart Chain commonly uses BscScan,Solana can use Solscan or Solana Explorer, and Bitcoin can use Mempool.space.
