Metadata: Understanding Blockchain and NFT's Descriptive Information
Metadata is "data that describes data." It helps people identify, find, and understand files, transactions, or tokens, and affects the readability and long-term accessibility of NFT content.
What Is Metadata
Metadata describes the characteristics, origin, or structure of other data, making the data easier to find and use. For example, a photo may include the date it was taken, the camera model, and the file size. This information is not displayed directly in the image, but it helps systems and users understand and organize the file.
The Role of Blockchain and NFT
Metadata for a blockchain transaction may include a timestamp, associated addresses, the transfer amount, and the transaction fee. These describe the transaction but are not the value being transferred. For NFT tokens, metadata can record the name, description, media links, and item attributes, allowing ownership records to express the specific content represented by the token.
On-chain and Off-chain Storage
On-chain metadata is written directly into a smart contract. It relies less on external services and is generally more durable, but storage costs are higher. Off-chain metadata is stored on external systems such as servers or IPFS and the token uses URI to point to the file. This costs less, but the file may become inaccessible if the link breaks or the storage location goes offline.
