Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP)Learning Guide
POAP is a digital badge system that uses blockchain to record event attendance. It is issued in the form of NFT and is typically provided free to participants as verifiable proof of attendance.
Basic Concepts
Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP)Originally a protocol for recording event attendance, it later also came to refer to the digital badges it issues. Each badge is unique and typically includes an image, event date, and serial number, comparable to a digital ticket secured by blockchain.
Issuance Method and Development
POAP Minted via smart contracts as ERC-721 tokens, initially operating on Ethereum before later migrating to the lower-cost, faster Gnosis Chain. It was first created at ETHDenver in 2019 to reward hackathon participants.
Uses and Current Status
Participants typically claim POAP by scanning an event QR code and may participate in community activities such as voting or prize draws. The project later attempted to use badge collections to document contributions, qualifications, or experiences. 2026 entered maintenance mode and announced a phased wind-down of operations in, but issued badges remain stored on-chain.
