Plasma Plasma: A scaling framework in which child chains share the processing workload of the main chain
Plasma is an off-the-main-chain scaling concept for Ethereum that delegates substantial processing work to layered child chains while relying on the main chain to provide the security foundation, thereby reducing the burden on the main chain.
Plasma The basic concept of
Plasma is not an independent blockchain, but a framework for building scalable applications. It organizes multiple smaller child chains on top of the Ethereum main chain, allowing most processing tasks to be completed on child chains while minimizing interaction between the child chains and the main chain, thereby alleviating main-chain congestion and improving overall processing efficiency.
How child chains form the system
The framework uses smart contracts and Merkle Trees to form a tree-like hierarchical structure in which many child chains can be created on top of the main chain. The evidence describes these child chains as Ethereum smaller copies of the blockchain; each child chain can also run customized smart contracts to serve specific purposes according to predefined rules.
Positioning and historical background
Vitalik Buterin and Joseph Poon in 2017 year August proposed Plasma, originally for Ethereum scaling, and its approach can also be adapted to other blockchains. It and Bitcoin for Lightning Network both aim to scale, but use different mechanisms, so they should not be considered the same type of solution.
