Introduction to Digital Assets
A Digital Asset is an item that exists in digital form, has value or utility, and can be owned and transferred. Blockchain further provides verifiable on-chain ownership, giving rise to new categories of Digital Assets, including Cryptocurrencies, Tokens,NFT and Real-world asset (RWA) tokens.
Key Characteristics of Digital Assets
Digital Assets typically have value or utility, a clearly identified owner or controller, exist in digital form, and can be transferred to others. Traditional files such as photographs and documents are also Digital Assets; blockchain assets differ in that their ownership can be recorded on a public ledger, making it verifiable and transferable without relying on a central authority.
Categories of Blockchain Digital Assets
Common categories include Cryptocurrencies used for payments or as a store of value; Tokens that provide access to services or represent an interest; Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) corresponding to specific items;NFT Stablecoins that seek to maintain a stable value; Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) issued by governments; and Real-world asset (RWA) tokens that represent assets such as real estate, commodities, or bonds.
Wallets, Control, and Regulation
Blockchain Digital Assets are typically accessed through a crypto wallet, which stores the private keys required to authorize transactions. Custodial wallets have their keys managed by a third party, while non-custodial wallets are managed by users themselves. Relevant regulation is still developing: the EU’s MiCA has established requirements for issuance, disclosure, and operations, while in the United States, legal rules concerning whether certain assets are securities or commodities continue to take shape.
