Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)Learning Guide
ASIC is a chip customized for a single task or a small number of specific tasks. In the cryptocurrency field, it is commonly used to perform the hash calculations required for mining at high speed and with low energy consumption, but its limited range of uses, equipment iteration, and concentration of computing power are also significant limitations.
ASIC’s basic characteristics
Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)is an integrated circuit designed for a particular use, unlike general-purpose CPU. Because the hardware only needs to perform a single task or a relatively narrow set of tasks, it can generally reduce unnecessary computational overhead and complete the designated work faster and with lower energy consumption.
ASIC How to participate in mining
In cryptocurrency mining,ASIC generally refers to hardware designed to run a specific hash algorithm. Miners repeatedly perform hash calculations until they obtain a valid output that meets the requirements; once the result is found, it can be used as proof of work, making the miner eligible to verify the transactions in the next block and receive the block reward.
Limitations behind the efficiency
ASIC’s high efficiency comes from its high degree of specialization, which also makes it inflexible: a chip manufactured for one algorithm generally cannot be repurposed for other tasks. As new models continue to be introduced, the efficiency and economic viability of older equipment may decline rapidly; some cryptocurrencies also use designs that make it difficult for ASIC to leverage its advantages.
The concentration of computing power
ASIC’s abundant hashpower helps with blockchain verification and security, but economies of scale may give better-resourced operators an advantage. Bulk equipment purchases, access to low-cost electricity, and the construction of large mining farms or mining pools may all raise the barrier to entry for individual miners and affect the extent to which the network remains decentralized over the long term.
