Soft Staking: A Beginner’s Guide
Soft Staking allows users to earn staking rewards while keeping their assets available for trading, transfers, or withdrawals, but yields, fees, limits, and specific rules vary by platform.
How Soft Staking Works
Users only need to hold eligible crypto assets in an account or wallet on a supported platform. The platform then participates in staking on their behalf and distributes part of the rewards to them. Rewards are typically calculated based on the eligible daily balance and paid in the same token held; throughout the process, the assets remain available for trading, transfers, or withdrawals.
How It Differs from Traditional Staking
Traditional staking typically requires users to lock tokens for a fixed period, during which they cannot trade or withdraw them; Soft Staking, by contrast, emphasizes that assets remain available at all times. This flexibility may involve trade-offs: because it does not represent the long-term commitment associated with locked staking, its rewards may be lower than those of locked staking, making it more suitable for users who prioritize liquidity and convenience.
Do Not Confuse It with Liquid Staking
Soft Staking is not a unified technical standard, but a term commonly used by trading platforms to describe flexible reward programs, and rules may vary by platform. Liquid Staking typically issues a tradable receipt token after assets are staked, such as stETH; Soft Staking generally only records the account balance and pays rewards, without issuing a separate receipt token.
What to Check Before Participating
When comparing different programs, check whether rewards are expressed using APY or APR and note that rates may change over time. Platforms may also charge service fees, set participation limits, or restrict the assets that qualify. Although Soft Staking allows users to earn rewards while retaining the ability to use their assets, they should still read the specific terms and risk disclosures before participating.
