Beginner's Guide to Token Generation Events (TGEs)
A TGE is a general term for a blockchain project creating and distributing its native token. It may be used to raise funds, build an early user base, or launch a product. It includes ICOs, IEOs, IDOs, airdrops, and other formats, and participants should understand the distribution mechanism, regulatory requirements, and project risks.
The Basic Meaning of a TGE
A token generation event (TGE) is the process by which a project creates and distributes a native token. Its purpose may be to raise development funds, attract early users, or launch decentralized products and services. It is not a single issuance model, but an umbrella term covering direct sales, platform offerings, decentralized offerings, airdrops, and other mechanisms.
The Relationship Between TGEs and ICOs
A TGE has a broader scope than an ICO. An ICO specifically refers to an offering that generally sells tokens or native coins to the public to raise funds, while a TGE also includes IEOs, IDOs, airdrops, and other forms. Every ICO can be classified as a TGE, but not every TGE raises funds through a token sale.
Common Distribution Formats
An IEO is hosted by a centralized exchange, which generally handles project review, identity verification, and token distribution. An IDO is conducted through a decentralized exchange or launchpad, reducing reliance on centralized intermediaries. An airdrop or fair launch makes no sale and distributes tokens directly to wallet holders or community members.
Key Checks Before Participating
When evaluating a TGE, review the whitepaper, verify the team's experience, total token supply, and vesting schedule, and confirm whether the smart contract has undergone an independent audit. Also consider differences in local regulation, sharp price volatility, failure to deliver the roadmap, code vulnerabilities, and the risk that the team may cease operations. Due diligence can support judgment but cannot eliminate risk.
