Virtual Machine Learning Guide
Learn how virtual machines simulate complete computers, how resources are managed by hypervisor, and understand the role of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)in smart contract execution.
What is a virtual machine
Virtual Machine(VM) is a program that simulates a complete computer system, with virtual CPU, memory, and storage. From the user's perspective, it resembles a physical computer with the same hardware and can also run operating systems, files, and applications.
How virtual machines work
A virtual machine's CPU, memory, and storage are simulated by software, so a single physical server can run multiple virtual machines simultaneously.hypervisor manages these virtual machines and maps their virtual hardware to the server's physical components; the number is still limited by the server's resources.
Uses for isolation and compatibility
A virtual machine can serve as a sandbox, isolating code from the rest of the system, making it suitable for testing new software or running potentially harmful code. It can also run different or older operating systems, such as Windows software on a Linux device.
EVM and blockchain
Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)is run by nodes on the Ethereum network to execute smart contracts. Its sandbox-style execution helps improve security, but cannot completely prevent resource-exhaustion attacks such as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service).EVM compatibility also allows other networks to reuse Ethereum's tools and developer ecosystem.
