BNB Beginner's Guide
BNB is BNB Chain's native cryptocurrency, used to pay transaction fees, participate in staking, and interact with on-chain applications and decentralized finance protocols. This page outlines its origins, network mechanisms, supply management, and primary uses.
Origins and Migration
BNB was launched through an initial token offering in 2017 with an initial total supply of 200000000 tokens, of which 100000000 tokens were allocated for sale. It was initially an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token and later migrated to BNB Chain, becoming the network's native asset and ecosystem utility token.
Role in the Network
On BNB Chain,BNB is used to pay transaction fees and can also be staked to participate in validation. The network uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA), combining features of Proof of Stake and Proof of Authority to enable relatively fast transaction finality while maintaining comparatively low fees.
Supply and Burns
BNB Chain gradually reduces the total supply of BNB through a quarterly automatic burn mechanism. The amount burned is dynamically adjusted based on the BNB price and the number of blocks produced by the network, with the long-term goal of reducing the total supply to 100000000 tokens; evidence states that as of the third quarter of 2026, 36 quarterly burns had been completed.
Common Use Cases
BNB can be used to pay on-chain fees, participate in decentralized finance protocols and provide liquidity, and interact with dApps and games on BNB Chain. Holders can also stake BNB to help secure the network or participate in token issuance activities organized by the ecosystem platform.
