What Are Bitcoin Stamps (Bitcoin Stamps)?
Bitcoin Stamps are an inscription scheme that writes digital art data into Bitcoin transaction outputs, with an emphasis on long-term preservation and resistance to pruning. This guide introduces the creation process and main protocols, as well as the differences between Bitcoin Stamps and Bitcoin Ordinals in storage location, data size, and signing method.
Basic Concepts
Bitcoin Stamps are digital art generated through Bitcoin Stamps protocol. They encode the artwork data into Bitcoin unspent transaction outputs (UTXO) and record it on the blockchain along with the transaction. Because the data is located in spendable outputs, the artwork can achieve strong durability and tamper resistance.
Creation and identification methods
When creating a stamp, the digital art is first converted into a Base64 string, then prefixed with “STAMP:” and written to a Bitcoin transaction. The data is distributed across multiple outputs through a multisignature transaction. Each stamp receives a unique number based on the time of the transaction and must satisfy rules such as a valid string and being the first transaction.
SRC-20 and SRC-721
Bitcoin Stamps primarily use SRC-20 and SRC-721。SRC-20 based on the Counterparty protocol to place arbitrary data into spendable data transactions;SRC-721 reduces file size and the cost of producing more detailed NFT by storing images in layers, indexing the color palette, and merging layers.
Differences from Bitcoin Ordinals
Both can attach data to the Bitcoin network, but their storage methods differ. Ordinals place information in witness data, which nodes can prune; Stamps embed images in UTXO, making them more difficult to prune. Stamps support more flexible image dimensions, but the larger the file, the higher the transaction cost typically is, and they use a multisignature mechanism.
