BNB Smart Chain(BSC) Beginner's Guide
BSC is BNB Chain's main chain within its ecosystem. It is EVM-compatible and can run smart contracts and various Web3 applications. Key learning areas include its ecosystem positioning,PoSA consensus,BEP-20 token standard, and essential security considerations when using wallets and cross-chain assets.
BSC positioning and use cases
BNB Smart Chain was launched in 2020 and is an independently operating blockchain compatible with EVM, rather than a Layer 2 dependent on another chain. It supports smart contracts, decentralized applications, DeFi,NFT and blockchain games. Developers can continue using many Ethereum tools, while users generally pay Gas fees in BNB.
Ecosystem evolution and components
The early BNB Beacon Chain was primarily responsible for transfers, governance, and staking, while BSC was responsible for applications compatible with EVM. After Chain Fusion was completed, Beacon Chain was shut down in 2024, and its related core functions were moved to BSC. The current ecosystem also includes opBNB for scaling and BNB Greenfield。
Consensus and token standards
BSC for decentralized data storage. It uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA): participants stake BNB, and validators are selected according to their stakes to process blocks. Revenue comes from transaction fees rather than newly minted BNB. The network primarily uses the BEP-20 token standard. Its core structure is similar to ERC-20 and defines behavior such as token issuance, balance records, and transfers.
Usage and risk awareness
Users can connect to BSC through compatible wallets to interact with dApps, swap tokens, or use DeFi services such as lending; transaction records and addresses can be queried on BscScan. Assets from other chains generally appear as wrapped tokens. Before connecting a wallet, approving transactions, or using cross-chain assets, users should verify the application's source, contract address, and asset-backing mechanism.
