Metaverse: From Virtual Worlds to the Digital Economy
The metaverse generally refers to continuously operating online 3D virtual environments where users can work, have fun, and socialize. It is often discussed in conjunction with virtual reality, Web3, and blockchain, but blockchain is not a necessary condition for its operation.
What is the metaverse
The metaverse refers to a continuously existing online 3D virtual environment, also known as the “experience internet” or the “3D internet.” In theory, users could enter it to work, play games, and socialize, so it is often viewed as a possible next form of the internet and is closely related to the concept of Web3.
Conceptual origins and current development
The term “metaverse” originates from Neal Stephenson 1992’s science-fiction novel *Snow Crash*. The book depicts a virtual universe that coexists with the real world and integrates virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. This complete form has not yet been achieved, but related technologies and various virtual worlds are gradually developing.
What role can blockchain play?
Blockchain is not a necessary condition for building the metaverse, but it can support its digital economy. Currencies, utility tokens, and NFT can be used to hold or exchange digital assets, while cryptocurrency wallets can enhance users’ control over virtual items; blockchain may also provide virtual worlds with open and transparent governance mechanisms.
