Bitcoin Core: A Beginner's Guide
Bitcoin Core is free, open-source software for connecting to the Bitcoin network, running a full node, and independently verifying blocks and transactions. It is suitable for users who want to reduce reliance on third parties.
What is it?
Bitcoin Core is a free, open-source implementation of Bitcoin software that enables users to connect to the Bitcoin network and run a full node. The project is not controlled by any single company or organization but is maintained collectively by developers worldwide; anyone can inspect the code, propose changes, or run the software independently.
How does it help verify information?
After Bitcoin Core is installed, the device downloads the blocks it receives and independently checks whether those blocks and the transactions broadcast by network participants are valid. Users can therefore understand the network's state based on a locally stored copy of the blockchain, reducing reliance on custodial services, external servers, or a single block explorer.
Wallet and maintenance
The software includes a wallet for sending and receiving Bitcoin. It also allows standalone wallets to connect to the user's own node and verify incoming payments. The project was originally released by Satoshi Nakamoto under the name “Bitcoin” and was later renamed to distinguish the software client from the network; today, updates must undergo public proposals, testing, and peer review.
