Long-Term Holding (HODL) Beginner's Guide
HODL refers to the practice of continuing to hold cryptocurrency amid market rises and falls, without selling due to short-term fluctuations. It originated from an online spelling error and gradually became a common term in the cryptocurrency community.
HODL What Is HODL
HODL describes a long-term holding approach: regardless of whether market prices rise or fall, holders do not sell easily. The term is particularly common during bear markets or periods of significant price volatility, often expressing an attitude of not selling in response to short-term market movements, but it does not itself guarantee investment results.
Origin of the Term
HODL originated from a spelling error by BitcoinTalk forum user GameKyuubi in the “I AM HODLING” post. During a market decline, he candidly admitted that he was not good at trading and therefore chose to continue holding. The misspelling subsequently gained popularity and was reinterpreted as “Hold On for Dear Life.”
From Holding to Building
HODL later came to be regarded as a strategic expression suitable for those who do not engage in short-term trading, and gave rise to the term BUIDL.BUIDL generally means “work heads-down,” emphasizing that developers and builders continue investing in blockchain application innovation rather than focusing solely on short-term changes in market prices.
