Introduction to Trading Platforms
Trading platforms provide organized venues or digital systems for buying and selling financial assets and can be classified by transaction type, trading instruments, and operating model. In the cryptocurrency sector, centralized and decentralized models are the two common types.
Basic Functions of Trading Platforms
A trading platform is a market that organizes buying and selling activities and may take the form of a physical venue or digital platform. Trading instruments include cryptocurrencies, commodities, and securities. As an intermediary between buyers and sellers, it provides liquidity in a relatively secure and orderly environment, making it easier for participants to complete asset transactions.
Common Classification Methods
Trading platforms can be classified by transaction type: traditional platforms primarily offer spot trading, in which assets are usually settled quickly; other platforms specialize in derivatives such as futures and options, whose value is derived from underlying assets. Platforms can also be classified by trading instruments, such as cryptocurrency, securities, commodities, and foreign exchange venues, and some platforms offer multiple services simultaneously.
Centralized Exchange
Centralized Exchange (CEX) is operated by a company that manages orders and holds users' funds in custody. It typically offers ease of use and relatively ample liquidity, but users must entrust their assets to the platform for safekeeping. Therefore, when choosing a platform, users should consider its security, reliability, and asset custody arrangements.
Decentralized Exchange
Decentralized Exchange (DEX) allows users to trade directly through smart contracts using self-custodial wallets, without relying on a centralized intermediary, which can reduce certain custody risks. Its limitations include potentially lower liquidity and the fact that it usually does not provide fiat deposit or withdrawal services. It may also require greater operational proficiency from beginners.
