Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) Beginner's Guide
ETF is an investment fund traded on a securities exchange that typically holds a basket of assets. Cryptocurrency ETF allows investors to gain exposure to the relevant assets through fund shares, but does not represent direct ownership of digital assets.
ETF What Is It
ETF is short for “Exchange-Traded Fund (Exchange-Traded Fund)”. It can hold a basket of assets such as stocks, bonds, commodities, or cryptocurrencies, and can be bought and sold during the trading day like individual stocks. Many ETF adopt passive strategies, seeking to track the performance of an index, industry, or asset class.
Cryptocurrency ETF How It Works
Cryptocurrency ETF gives investors exposure to digital assets through regulated exchange-listed products, without requiring them to custody wallets and private keys themselves. Investors purchase fund shares and do not directly own the underlying cryptocurrencies; therefore, they cannot control the wallets holding the corresponding assets or independently determine the custody arrangements.
Spot and Futures ETF
Spot ETF directly holds the underlying digital assets, with fund shares corresponding to assets held in custody; Futures ETF gains exposure through futures contracts. Futures contracts need to be rolled over upon expiry, which may incur additional costs and tracking error; Spot ETF typically has a more direct relationship with the spot price of the underlying asset.
Benefits and Risk Boundaries
ETF can provide diversified exposure through a single instrument and offers the convenience of intraday trading on a securities exchange. However, investors still bear expense ratios and management fees, and fund performance may deviate from that of the underlying assets. Whether a product can be purchased is also affected by the regulatory rules of the investor’s jurisdiction, the fund structure, and market liquidity.
