Market Sentiment: Understanding the Collective Attitude of Market Participants
Market sentiment reflects the overall view that traders and investors have of an asset or market. It may influence prices in the short to medium term, but cannot by itself serve as a reliable basis for trading.
What Is Market Sentiment
Market sentiment is the overall attitude that market participants form toward a particular asset or the market as a whole at a given time, including optimistic and pessimistic tendencies. It reflects the collective psychology behind price action; when many people hold similar views, concentrated buying or selling may drive prices to move in the same direction.
Where Does Sentiment Come From
Market sentiment may be influenced by fundamental and technical analysis, recent news, social media discussions, and historical price performance. Unlike fundamental analysis, which focuses on a project's underlying performance, reputation, or market capitalization, sentiment can change very quickly and may also be triggered by the broader economic outlook or widespread online discussion.
Uses and Limitations of Contrarian Indicators
Some traders view extreme sentiment as a contrarian indicator: when the market is excessively bullish, they consider selling or reducing exposure; when sentiment is unusually bearish, they look for buying opportunities. Tools such as the Fear & Greed Index attempt to quantify this psychology, but extreme sentiment can persist for a long time, so this approach does not guarantee profits.
