Market Momentum: An Introductory Guide to Assessing Trend Strength
Market momentum describes the speed, direction, and strength of asset price movements. It helps assess whether a trend still has momentum, but cannot predict future outcomes on its own and should be evaluated together with information such as trading volume and fundamentals.
What Is Market Momentum
Market momentum measures the speed and direction of an asset's price increase or decrease over a period of time. Strengthening momentum generally indicates that the current trend is gaining strength; weakening momentum may mean that the trend is losing momentum and entering consolidation or reversing. However, this is only a description of the current market state, not a guarantee of subsequent price movements.
How to Calculate and Determine Direction
A common calculation is to subtract the closing price from n days ago from the current price, where n can be set to 10 days, 20 days, or 50 days based on the observation period. A positive result indicates that the price is higher than in the past and that momentum is upward; a negative result indicates downward momentum. Comparing results across multiple periods can also show whether momentum is strengthening or weakening.
What Else to Consider Beyond Price
Trading volume can supplement price momentum information: when price movements are accompanied by higher trading volume, this often indicates that more market participants are involved.RSI、MACD, stochastic RSI and VWAP technical indicators can also help measure momentum. In practice, analysis should incorporate fundamentals and risk management, avoiding decisions based on a single indicator.
