Moving Average Ribbon: Using multiple moving averages to observe trends
A moving average ribbon places moving averages with different periods on the same chart. The distance between and movement of the lines help assess market momentum, trend strength, and potential reversals. It is a technical analysis tool that provides observational clues only and cannot guarantee accurate conclusions on its own.
Basic Structure and Settings
A moving average ribbon consists of multiple moving averages with different periods, and common configurations include four to eight lines. For example, it can be configured at 10-day intervals, 10 days to 60-day simple moving averages; the default combination in the material is 20 days, 50 days, 100 days, and 200 days. The number, periods, and intervals of the moving averages can all be adjusted according to analytical needs.
How Periods Affect Sensitivity
Moving average combinations with shorter periods respond more quickly to minor price fluctuations and are suitable for observing short-term momentum, but they may also change more frequently. Combinations with longer periods are less sensitive to short-term fluctuations and focus more on long-term trends and significant turning points. Changing the moving average periods or switching to exponential moving averages can adjust the sensitivity of the moving average ribbon.
Observing Ribbon Width and Trend Changes
When the moving averages gradually spread apart and the moving average ribbon widens, it generally indicates that the current trend is strengthening; during an upward move, short-term moving averages gradually move farther away from long-term moving averages. When the moving averages converge and the ribbon narrows, the price may be stabilizing or pulling back, or it may signal a trend reversal. Further confirmation using other information is needed.
