Buy Wall Beginner's Guide
A Buy Wall is a large limit buy order concentrated at a particular price in an order book. It may temporarily slow a decline, but it does not guarantee that the price will hold or necessarily reflect genuine trading intent.
What Is a Buy Wall?
A Buy Wall is a single large limit buy order or a group of buy orders at the same price. In an order book, it usually appears as a tall block on the buy side at a particular price. Sellers would need to sell a large amount of the asset to fill it completely, so the price may temporarily have difficulty falling below that level.
How It Affects the Market
An exchange's order book records the prices buyers are willing to pay and the prices sellers are asking. When many buy orders accumulate at one price, a buy wall may create temporary support and influence where other traders place orders. However, a buy wall often lasts only briefly, may move up or down as the market changes, and may never be filled completely.
Limitations and Risks
Whales or automated trading programs may create, adjust, or cancel a buy wall, so it may not represent genuine and lasting buying intent. During a strong downtrend, sell orders may rapidly consume the buy wall and fill it completely within seconds. A buy wall cannot guarantee that the price will remain at the corresponding level.
