Seed Phrase: The Basics of Wallet Backup and Recovery
A mnemonic phrase is a wallet recovery credential typically consisting of 12 to 24 words. It is convenient for backup and can derive multiple keys, but it must be stored accurately and privately.
What is a seed phrase used for?
A seed phrase, also commonly called a mnemonic phrase, is an important credential for accessing and recovering a cryptocurrency wallet. Wallets typically ask users to write down a set of random words; if the original device is lost or the wallet cannot be opened, these words can be entered into a compatible wallet to regenerate the relevant keys and restore control over the assets.
Why does it make backup easier?
Compared with recording complex private keys directly, ordinary words are easier to write down and verify accurately, helping reduce human errors during the backup process. A single seed phrase can also derive many keys and receiving addresses from a master key, so users do not need to keep a separate backup for each address.
Key points for secure storage
Once obtained by another person, a seed phrase may allow that person to recover the wallet and control its assets. It should therefore never be disclosed, shared, or entered on pages from unknown sources. Successful recovery also depends on whether the seed phrase was recorded accurately and whether the target wallet supports the corresponding seed phrase and derivation rules; simply remembering the name does not guarantee compatibility.
