Public Key: A Public Digital Identity Identifier
A public key is the shareable half of a public-key cryptography key pair. Used together with the private key, which must remain confidential, it enables secure communications as well as cryptocurrency receipt and transaction verification.
Relationship Between Public and Private Keys
Public and private keys exist as a pair: the system first creates the private key and then uses an algorithm to generate the corresponding public key. The public key can be shared, and it is generally not possible to derive the private key from it; the private key, however, must be kept strictly confidential. The public key can be understood as a publicly accessible lock or address, while the private key is the unique key that can unlock it.
Role in Cryptocurrency
In cryptocurrency contexts, a public key can serve as the digital address identifying a wallet and may be provided to the remitter when receiving funds. When funds need to be accessed or used, the wallet uses the private key to sign the transaction and generate a digital signature, proving that the operator is authorized to control the funds associated with that public key.
Basic Security Principles
Making a public key available generally does not disclose the corresponding private key, but if someone else obtains the private key, they may be able to control the associated cryptocurrency. Therefore, when receiving funds, share the public key or wallet address—not the private key; treat any request for a private key with caution.
