51% attackAlso known as a majority attack, this refers to an attack in which the attacker controls more than half of the blockchain network’s hashing power and may disrupt consensus, transaction confirmation, or carry out double-spending.
BEP-695Used to tighten permission and restriction rules in consensus key rotation, penalty inheritance, and signature governance voting.
GlamsterdamA planned upgrade covering both the Ethereum execution layer and consensus layer, with a name formed by combining Amsterdam and Gloas.
PoSAProof of Staked Authority is BSC’s consensus mechanism; validators participate in block validation by staking BNB and earn transaction fees.
Proof of StakeA consensus mechanism in which validators lock up tokens to help secure the network and validate blocks.
Proof of Stake (PoS)A consensus mechanism that rewards block validation based on the amount of tokens staked by validators.
Proof of WorkA consensus mechanism in which miners compete to validate blocks,Bitcoin uses this mechanism.
SidechainsAn independent blockchain that runs in parallel to the main chain and connects to it via a bridge, while having its own consensus mechanism and security model.
ePBSThe protocol incorporates an enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) mechanism, bringing the responsibilities for selecting consensus blocks and assembling execution payloads, as well as the handoff process, into the core protocol.
proof of stake (PoS)A consensus method that does not rely on hash mining, and therefore does not require competition over ASIC mining capacity.
proof of work (PoW)A consensus mechanism that relies on miners repeatedly performing computations and finding valid solutions.
proof-of-workA consensus mechanism in which miners compete to solve mathematical problems; the finder of a valid solution may add the next block and receive a block reward.
“Proof of Work” (PoW)The consensus mechanism used in Bitcoin mining, in which completing computational work requiring substantial computing power serves as the basis for adding new blocks.
Nakamoto ConsensusA protocol used by a blockchain network to reach consensus on the state of the blockchain, designed to enable participants to agree on a single, secure version of the blockchain.
SidechainAn independent blockchain that operates in parallel with Bitcoin, has its own consensus rules, and connects to Bitcoin through a cross-chain mechanism.
Beacon ChainEthereum’s proof-of-stake consensus layer, responsible for coordinating stakers to validate the network and maintain network security.
Full nodeA node that independently verifies blocks and transactions according to the network’s consensus rules; it is not the same as a miner.
ConsensusA function used to verify the authenticity of transactions and coordinate the state of the network.
Consensus layerAn architectural layer responsible for implementing consensus algorithms such as PoW and PoS, enabling network participants to reach agreement on the state of the blockchain.
Consensus mechanismA set of rules that governs how network nodes reach agreement on the state of the blockchain and the validity of transactions.
Consensus algorithmA mechanism that helps different computers in a blockchain network reach agreement on a shared state or fact.
Double spendingThe issue of using the same digital asset more than once; Satoshi consensus prevents this by confirming valid transactions.
Proof of WorkA consensus mechanism in which miners solve cryptographic puzzles through computation to validate transactions and create new blocks.
Proof of Work (PoW)A consensus mechanism in which miners compete using computational power to solve problems, thereby validating transactions and adding new blocks.
Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA)Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) is a consensus mechanism that combines the characteristics of Proof of Stake and Proof of Authority, emphasizing relatively fast finality and lower fees.
Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA)A consensus mechanism that combines Proof of Stake with Proof of Authority, requiring validators to both hold or stake tokens and have a trusted reputation.
Proof of Authority (PoA)A consensus model in which validators are preselected based on their reputation; the key requirement for becoming a validator is a trusted reputation rather than staked assets.
Proof of StakeA mechanism that supports network consensus through participants staking assets and performing validation activities.
Proof of Stake (PoS)A consensus mechanism that selects validators primarily based on the amount of cryptocurrency staked by participants.
Proof of Stake (PoS)A consensus mechanism in which validators stake assets on the network to participate in creating new blocks.
Modular blockchainA blockchain architecture that separates responsibilities such as execution, settlement, consensus, and data availability across different layers or networks.
Surround votingThe act of validators voting for two conflicting blockchains or transaction sets in an attempt to split the network or manipulate the consensus process.
Permissionless blockchainAn open blockchain network that requires no prior approval, permission, or authorization, allowing anyone to participate in the consensus process.
