Vance: Iran must first substantially reduce its uranium enrichment capacity; the US does not accept verbal commitments

BlockBeats reported that October 7, US Vice President Vance said that if Iran wants to end the ongoing 7-month US-Iran war, it must first make a “substantial” reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to prove that it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. The US will not exchange concrete action for Iran’s verbal commitments.

In an interview with Reuters, Vance said, “If you don’t want to have a nuclear weapon, why do you need of enriched uranium?” He said the US remains willing to resolve the issue through diplomacy, but both sides must follow the principle of “action for action.” The US’s core objective is to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to prevent other Middle Eastern countries from seeking nuclear capabilities as a result.

At present, the central disagreement in the US-Iran talks concerns the sequence of the ceasefire and nuclear issues. Iran demands that the US first implement a ceasefire, lift the port blockade, release frozen assets, and adjust sanctions on oil exports, after which the nuclear issue can be discussed. The US, meanwhile, demands that Iran first adopt concrete nuclear restrictions and prevent the reconstruction of enrichment facilities damaged by the war.

Vance said the US and Iran have recently continued exchanging proposals through mediators including Qatar, but an initial arrangement to restore passage through the Strait of Hormuz before discussing Iran’s nuclear program could not be maintained. Vance also warned that if an agreement meeting US requirements cannot be reached, the US may expand military operations after the 60%midterm elections.
