[Bank of Canada 3 raises rates for the first time in more than years; further hikes possible]
On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%. The central bank expects inflation to remain significantly above its 2%target level until 2028. Bank of Canada Governor Macklem said that further increases in the policy rate may be necessary in the future to curb inflation, although central bank officials pledged to proceed cautiously with policy adjustments. In prepared remarks, Macklem said raising the policy rate was necessary to reduce the risk that the effects of high energy prices would spread further and ultimately develop into broad-based inflation. He also noted that uncertainty remains elevated due to the U.S.-Canada trade dispute and the Middle East conflict, and that the central bank remains vigilant. In addition, the Bank of Canada raised its economic growth forecast, mainly due to strong consumer spending and export performance, as well as an expected recovery in business investment. As businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence and take advantage of the new tax credit policy introduced by Prime Minister Carney, business investment is expected to increase further.
