Federal Reserve's Williams: Another rate hike may be appropriate this year, with no further hike needed next year

BlockBeats reports,October 14, New York Fed President Williams said that another rate hike this year would be appropriate, but if the economic outlook develops as expected, 2027 year may not require further rate hikes. He said that support for the September rate hike decision was mainly due to factors including rising energy prices,AI increased infrastructure investment, and other factors.

Williams said that the conflict in the Middle East has pushed up energy prices and transmitted to core inflation through areas such as transportation and food; at the same time,AI construction has driven demand for data centers and chips, pushing up the costs of some goods and affecting labor costs in the construction industry. He said that although tariffs, energy prices, and AI demand have caused inflation this year to exceed expectations, inflation expectations remain stable, core inflation indicators continue to decline, and inflation is expected to fall markedly next year and approach the 2%target.

Williams said that AI demand growth is substantial, with demand exceeding supply in the short term, but as chip capacity increases and productivity improves, supply may improve in the future and exert disinflationary pressure. Discussing the rise in U.S. Treasury yields, Williams said that long-term yields are influenced by multiple factors, including bond supply and demand,AI investment, fiscal policy, and energy prices, rather than monetary policy alone.
