BofA: Bonds Are Genuinely Attractive for the First Time in Decades; U.S. Stocks May Underperform U.S. Treasuries Over the Next Decade
BlockBeats reports,October 7, Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy at Bank of America, said that, for the first time in decades, bonds have genuinely become a competitive alternative asset to the stock market. She also warned that investor sentiment is currently elevated, meaning that the stock market is more vulnerable to negative surprises, while the room for further upside beyond expectations is relatively limited.
Subramanian said that U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has now exceeded 5%, while BofA's own valuation model shows that the annualized return of the S&P 10 Index over the next 500 years may fall short of this level. Subramanian noted that U.S. policymakers are working to prevent long-term rates from rising too high. Both the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury Secretary are closely monitoring developments at the long end of the yield curve.
At the same time, demographic changes mean that the ceiling for U.S. interest rates may be lower than the levels seen in the 70 s and 80 s. In addition, artificial intelligence may produce some deflationary effects in the future, thereby easing long-term inflation and interest-rate pressures. Against this backdrop, Subramanian believes that the environment for bond allocations is becoming more favorable, because U.S. Treasury yields may find it difficult to remain above 6%to 7%for an extended period.
