Fed's Williams: Another rate hike may be needed this year, but there is no need to act hastily
BlockBeats News,September 30, New York Fed President John Williams stated that the Federal Reserve, after September meeting rate hike, does not need to rush into acting again and can wait for more economic data to determine the next policy direction. Williams stated that if the economy develops broadly in line with his expectations, a further increase in the target range for the federal funds rate may be needed before year-end to bring inflation back to the 2%target more promptly. However, he emphasized that this is only a personal forecast, and the final decision will depend on future data. Williams said that with economic growth remaining solid and the labor market performing well, inflationary pressures will continue to be a focus of monetary policy. He stated that the Federal Reserve must ensure that inflation does not remain persistently elevated due to shocks and avoid the formation of second-round inflation effects.
He noted that inflationary pressures this year have been affected by Trump's tariff policies and rising energy prices caused by the Middle East conflict, while artificial intelligence investment has also increased some price pressures. Williams expects U.S. inflation to reach approximately 3.5%by the end of this year, then gradually decline and return to its target level in 2028. Williams expects U.S. economic growth this year to be approximately 2.25%, with the unemployment rate next year at approximately 4%. He stated that immigration factors, population aging, and limited productivity growth constrain the economy's long-term growth potential. (Jin10)
