Morgan Stanley: The bond market has already tightened financial conditions on behalf of the Fed, moderate CPI inflation could drive a broader U.S. stock rally
BlockBeats reports,October 12, Morgan Stanley Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson said that the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has risen by approximately February basis points since 120; combined with a stronger USD and elevated oil prices, financial conditions have tightened significantly, and the bond market is already completing part of the tightening work that the Federal Reserve would otherwise need to achieve through rate hikes. If this process is sufficient to suppress economic demand, the Federal Reserve may not need to raise rates further in the future.
Wilson noted that U.S.September CPI will be released this Wednesday. If inflation continues to moderate, it could ease upward pressure on long-term interest rates and reduce market expectations for further rate hikes. He recommended focusing on bond-market volatility and the performance of financial stocks to assess whether financial conditions are stabilizing.
Wilson believes that the resilience of U.S. stocks recently has been driven mainly by large-cap AI-related stocks. The S&P 500 market-cap-weighted index has clearly outperformed the equal-weighted index, reflecting that high interest rates continue to weigh on most stocks. If bond-market volatility declines and bank earnings remain solid, the rally could broaden from AI leaders to more sectors. He also noted that part of the current rise in U.S. Treasury yields reflects capital demand arising from AI infrastructure investment, rather than simply recession risks.
