5% Treasury Yield Loses Its Deterrent Effect; Market Begins Pricing in 6%
BlockBeats reported on September 24 that the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield returned to 5%, yet neither the cryptocurrency market nor global equities saw a sharp sell-off. Wall Street's threshold for interest-rate risk pressure is gradually shifting from 5% toward the 5.5% to 6% range.
Mike Bell, head of market strategy at BlueBay Asset Management, said there is no absolute “magic level” that triggers a sell-off; the key is the relative premium between Treasury yields and the earnings returns of risk assets. As risk-free yields continue to rise, if corporate earnings do not expand in tandem, equity risk compensation will remain under pressure.
JPMorgan recently found in discussions with major institutions that investors generally believe the yield level that could truly force a broad equity-market repricing has risen from 5% to 5.5% to 6%. The growing share of AI, advanced manufacturing, and high-end services has also given some high-growth companies more abundant cash flow, reducing the short-term impact of high interest rates on corporate investment.
However, financing costs above 5% may still have persistent effects. Paul Jackson, head of global asset allocation research at Invesco, noted that when the 12-month moving average of the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rises above 4.72%, global equities often begin to face material pressure. The report said this average is currently about 4.34%.
Federal Reserve official Goolsbee also warned that yields briefly reaching 5% and remaining above 5% for an extended period are different matters; persistently high financing costs could eventually erode corporate budgets and capital expenditures. Neil Birrell, chief investment officer at Premier Miton, said current market calm partly reflects the fact that institutional earnings models have not yet fully incorporated discount rates above 5% over the long term. The real pressure may emerge when markets collectively reprice future cash flows.
