Claude Closing Google’s productivity gap: Docs, Sheets, and Slides can finally be edited directly
news Beating AI news, Anthropic has brought Claude directly into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The new Claude for Google Workspace is now available for public beta testing on all paid plans. After installation,Claude appears on the right side of the file. It can read the current file and content selected by the user, and make changes directly in the original file.
All three applications support direct editing. Docs can rewrite and rearrange documents; Sheets can write formulas, create pivot tables and native charts, and use Python to clean data before writing it back to the spreadsheet; Slides can use existing templates to generate new pages and check for issues such as overlapping elements and text overflow. By default, users must confirm each change before it is made, but they can also choose continuous execution.
Anthropic has also launched new Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors. Users can also create or edit Google files from Claude chats by simply pasting a file link. Previously,Claude’s Google Workspace integration was mainly used to search Gmail, Calendar, and Drive content. This release is the first to truly expand the capability from “reading information” to “editing files directly.”
There are still some limitations. The Workspace sidebar can operate only on the currently open file by default and cannot handle Docs comments or existing suggestions; when the sidebar is closed, tasks in progress will also stop. The entire feature remains in Beta.
