Chip-backed financing could exceed a trillion USD, as CoreWeave bonds fall to par 80 cents

BlockBeats reported that October 24, as AI infrastructure investment surges, structured financing using GPU chips as collateral is becoming an important source of funding for the AI industry, with the market potentially exceeding a trillion in the future USD. Broadcom is negotiating with Wall Street institutions to arrange 60000000000 USD in chip financing for Anthropic, while SpaceX is reportedly seeking 40000000000 USD in financing for Nvidia chips. Nvidia had also previously announced a 500000000000 USD cooperation framework with financial institutions.

Such financing typically holds chips through special-purpose vehicles (SPV), repaying debt with cash flows generated by customer contracts, while reducing financing costs through guarantees or backstop commitments from chipmakers. JPMorgan analysts expect that, by 2030, total chip spending could exceed 3000000000000 USD, with most of it relying on debt financing.

However, risks in the AI debt market are also accumulating. Some CoreWeave corporate bonds recently fell to 80%of par, with yields rising to around 15%, reflecting market concerns over returns on AI investments. As the related transactions are mostly private placements, liquidity is limited, and there are highly concentrated cross-exposures among chipmakers, cloud-computing giants, and emerging AI companies, risks could spread along the supply chain if AI commercialization falls short of expectations.
