Terra
LUNA is Terra the native token of a blockchain, which is a decentralized platform designed to host applications and provide financial tools. After transitioning from Terra Classic, the new Terra chain was established through a community-led governance proposal aimed at focusing on a decentralized economy without stablecoins. As the protocol’s foundational asset,LUNA serves as the engine of the network; value flows through the network when users pay gas fees to interact with decentralized applications. Its main value proposition is that it can scale staker rewards as developer activity and transaction volume within the ecosystem grow. The network maintains security through a proof-of-stake system using Tendermint consensus, in which 130 independent validators cross-check transactions to ensure the integrity of the blockchain. Users who do not want to run their own nodes can delegate their tokens to these validators to help record and verify data. To ensure accountability, the protocol employs a slashing mechanism; if validators misbehave or go offline, this penalty mechanism removes a small portion of the staked tokens. The project was initially created by Terraform Labs and has since evolved into a community-governed model, with independent developer groups and users jointly maintaining the protocol.Terraform Labs currently manages a claims portal for users affected by previous network incidents, as part of ongoing legal and bankruptcy proceedings. The token has several functions, including paying gas fees to interact with decentralized applications, providing voting power on governance proposals, and earning rewards through a fixed 7%annual inflation rate.
