Blackstone President Rebuts AI Bubble Argument: Demand Shows “Parabolic” Growth, Fundamentally Different from the 90 Era Telecom Bubble
According to BlockBeats,October 22, amid Wall Street’s growing AI bubble concerns, Blackstone President Jon Gray offered the opposite view. He stated that current AI infrastructure development is fundamentally different from the telecom-sector bubble of the 90 era. At that time, companies often expanded capacity on a massive scale and then waited for demand to emerge; today, companies are striving to build infrastructure to keep pace with real demand that has already grown rapidly. Gray described current AI demand as “parabolic growth” and disclosed that Ode, the AI consulting firm jointly created by Blackstone and Anthropic, is currently unable even to meet customer demand. This stands in sharp contrast to the pessimistic view expressed days earlier by Citadel founder Ken Griffin that the market is “almost certainly in a AI bubble.”
Blackstone is making AI a core investment focus, with its data-center investments currently totaling approximately 200000000000 USD, while broadly allocating capital to power, transmission facilities, and other supporting infrastructure. However, Gray also acknowledged that even if demand is real, this does not mean every investment will generate ideal returns. Some cloud-computing service providers focused on AI(such as CoreWeave) are currently facing financing difficulties, despite their core businesses performing reasonably well. Gray noted that building data centers requires substantial upfront investment, and investors must weigh whether future cash flows can cover financing costs, as well as the risk of asset depreciation caused by technological iteration. The current bubble debate is essentially testing whether explosive demand for AI can ultimately translate into sustainable commercial returns sufficient to cover high costs.
