ByteDance reportedly plans to purchase 1000000 new NVIDIA cards, potentially subject to approval
Beating AI Flash News, The Information cited people familiar with the matter as saying that officials are considering allowing companies including ByteDance and Alibaba to purchase NVIDIA RTX PRO 5500. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently asked these companies to report their planned purchase quantities and intended uses, and indicated to some companies that it intended to approve them. However, when approval will be granted and how many may be purchased remain undetermined.
ByteDance is considering purchasing approximately 1000000 units of RTX PRO 5500, with the final quantity depending on the approval outcome and NVIDIA's supply capacity. This card is not a data center AI chip like the H200, but rather a newly listed Blackwell workstation GPU, equipped with 84GB GDDR7 of memory. NVIDIA officially positions it as a rack-mounted workstation and explicitly states that it supports large-model inference, agents, and generative AI.
The report also said that some Chinese buyers plan to install 8 units of RTX PRO 5500 in each server to run AI models. NVIDIA plans to begin shipments in late December and aims to supply China with approximately 500000 units per quarter. If ByteDance ultimately purchases 1000000 units, that single company would account for the planned supply volume of quarters.
Chinese companies still face a shortage of AI computing capacity. Xu Zhijun, Huawei's rotating chairman, also said last week that its AI computing equipment production capacity cannot even meet domestic demand. However, whether RTX PRO 5500 can successfully enter China faces another hurdle: the U.S. government has not publicly confirmed whether it complies with existing export restrictions, and only some industry insiders currently expect that it does.
