Devin starts “dreaming” every day: automatically organizing long-term memories, with the approach now open-sourced

Beating AI news flash,AI the programming company Cognition has launched Memory and Dreaming。Memory to let Devin remember users’ preferences, corrections, and project experience across sessions;Dreaming reorganizes these memories in the background every day. Users can directly view what Devin remembers, as well as see what Dreaming has recently modified.

These memories are stored in a personal Memory Drive, essentially a persistent Git repository, with content organized mainly in Markdown files. One of them is a brief MEMORY.md file that serves as the entry point and index, and is loaded into the context at the start of each new session. Devin then searches for relevant memory files based on the current task, much like searching a code repository, without needing to stuff the entire memory repository into the prompt.

Multiple Devin sessions can read and write to the same set of memories. Each session has its own Git checkout; after modifying memories, it commits and merges them back into Memory Drive. When concurrent modifications occur,Git exposes the conflicts, preventing different sessions from overwriting one another.Dreaming itself is a background session that runs automatically every day. It rechecks past conversations and existing memories, merges duplicate content, deletes temporary or long-unused information, and fills in experience that had not previously been recorded.

Cognition also separated this approach into an Agent Memory Repo and open-sourced it. Other Agents such as Claude Code and Cursor can use a similar approach to store long-term memories in files and manage them through Git. However, the open-source version provides the memory structure and workflow; automatically running Dreaming every day, as Devin does, still requires additional configuration.
