Sweden reconsiders digital krona plan as the European Central Bank advances digital EUR deployment

BlockBeats news,October 16, the Riksbank is reassessing the possibility of launching a digital krona and regards the European Central Bank’s (ECB) plan to advance digital EUR and the growth in stablecoin usage as important reasons to reconsider issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The Riksbank sent a letter to the parliamentary Finance Committee on October 7 and published the letter on Thursday, urging lawmakers to begin preparing legislation for a possible future launch of the digital krona. 3 years ago, a Swedish government inquiry concluded that Sweden had no sufficient need or justification at that time to issue a digital krona.

In its letter, the Riksbank stated that the European Central Bank plans to launch a digital 2027 pilot in EUR and may officially make it available to the public in 2029. The Riksbank believes that if Sweden does not launch a corresponding digital version of its national currency, the competitiveness of its payment system could be weakened. In addition, the Riksbank views the growth in the use of foreign-currency stablecoins, particularly stablecoins pegged to USD, as a long-term concern. However, it believes that such risks remain relatively limited in the short term.
