ByteDance in talks to purchase from MediaTek AI chips; Qualcomm previously secured orders for several million units
Beating AI breaking news: ByteDance is in advanced negotiations with MediaTek and plans to purchase ASIC custom chips for its own data centers. Bloomberg October 15 cited people familiar with the matter as saying that the two sides are close to reaching an agreement, but the purchase volume, chip specifications, and delivery schedule have not been disclosed. If the deal is completed, ByteDance could become MediaTek's second major ASIC customer after Google.
This is not the first time ByteDance has sought to purchase data center chips from a mobile chipmaker. Earlier this year,May Bloomberg reported that ByteDance had reached an agreement with Qualcomm and planned to purchase several million ASIC chips for running AI Agent. Qualcomm will also help ByteDance put its completed in-house chip designs into production. Its latest approach to MediaTek indicates that ByteDance is expanding its custom-chip supply channels to ease computing pressure caused by U.S. export restrictions and insufficient domestic chip production capacity.
MediaTek previously relied mainly on its mobile processor business. It has now entered Google's TPU supply chain and begun competing with companies such as Broadcom and Qualcomm for data center orders. MediaTek expects its data center AI chip revenue this year to exceed 2000000000 USD. Nvidia also August subscribed to 3500000000 USD of MediaTek's convertible bonds and announced a partnership to develop custom AI infrastructure. Such ASIC can optimize performance, power consumption, and cost for specific tasks, but it has not yet been disclosed whether the chips ByteDance is seeking to purchase will be used for training or inference.
