High interest rates fail to deter borrowing demand as the three largest U.S. banks' net interest income reaches another record high

BlockBeats news,October 13, despite rising interest rates, U.S. consumers and businesses continued to borrow, driving third-quarter lending revenue at the three largest U.S. banks to another record high. Earnings reports released Tuesday by JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo showed that the three companies' combined third-quarter net interest income reached 56500000000 USD, setting a new record for the fifth consecutive quarter.

JPMorgan Chase expects 2027 net interest income to increase further. This outlook contrasts sharply with expectations earlier this year. At that time, banks generally expected interest rates to decline, while record trading revenue captured most of investors' attention, leaving traditional interest income from loans and other interest-earning assets relatively overlooked.

The banks also believe that consumers and businesses remain able to repay their loans on time. All three banks reported a decrease in nonaccrual loans, meaning a decline in the volume of loans for which banks have stopped recognizing interest income. Bank of America will release its third-quarter results on Wednesday. However, amid a range of geopolitical uncertainties, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, persistently stubborn inflation, and high oil prices, the banks remain cautious.
