The U.S. Treasury’s weekly Treasury auction financing reached 839000000000 USD, a record high
BlockBeats reported that October 30, this week, the U.S. government raised 839000000000 USD, setting a record high. This was done both to repay maturing debt and to raise additional funds needed to finance the federal deficit. The Treasury bill, floating-rate note, and 2-year, 5-year, and 7-year Treasury note auctions exceeded the 834000000000 USD record set during the same period last year. This 839000000000 USD total covers the size of 11 auctions, most of which was used to repay the principal owed to holders of maturing Treasury bills. The portion that was truly “new borrowing” by the U.S. government was only 106000000000 USD, far below historical highs.
The previous peak occurred in 2020 and March, and April when Treasury auction volumes surged to raise funds for the pandemic response. Weekly net new cash once peaked at nearly 362000000000 USD. Tony Falloon of the rates sales and trading division at Mischler Financial Group said: “The Treasury’s record-high total weekly debt issuance is by no means a good thing. The greatest risk is that investors may demand higher yields.”
