Tears of the times! Devv announces shutdown: once serving over million developers,AI Search finally becomes a standard feature of general-purpose assistants

Dongcha Beating AI breaking news: developer AI search product Devv has announced its shutdown. Founder Zhang Jiayuan said that the team will devote all its energy to AI Agent collaboration platform Multica. Over the past 3 years, Devv has served more than million developers worldwide.

Devv went 2023 live in October. At the time, large models were not yet good at searching for the latest programming materials, and developers often had to switch back and forth between search engines and ChatGPT. Devv built a search index specifically for programmers, integrated technical documentation and GitHub code, and then had AI provide answers directly. Within 4 weeks of launch, weekly active users reached 25000. It later introduced paid subscriptions, with first-month revenue exceeding 28000 USD.

But in just 3 years,AI search was no longer unusual. ChatGPT and Claude can both search the internet for information, while coding Agents such as Claude Code and Codex have gone a step further: they can search for information, write code, and run tests on their own, directly helping developers complete tasks. The differentiated advantage Devv once took pride in gradually became a foundational capability of general-purpose AI tools.

In fact, Zhang Jiayuan had already disclosed this year,May that Devv would be taken offline. The team had previously also tried AI coding product DevCode, but ultimately chose to abandon it as well.

Now, they are betting on Multica. This time, they are no longer building search, nor are they creating a coding Agent themselves. Instead, they enable multiple Agents to collaborate like team members. You assign the tasks; they execute them, report progress, proactively flag problems, and hand the results back to you for review once complete.

From “helping programmers find answers” to “letting AI do the work themselves,” Devv’s departure happens to bear witness to the changes in developer tools over the past 3 years.
