Supabase acquires Turso: Making it possible for every Agent to spin up a database on demand

Beating AI news flash: Supabase announced the acquisition of database company Turso. Turso reimplemented SQLite using Rust and turned it into cloud databases that can be created at scale and on demand. Supabase plans to use it to serve AI Agent, so every Agent can quickly obtain an independent database.

The acquisition targets the surge in the number of databases driven by Agents. Supabase said that more than 1000000 databases are now created each week, with approximately 70%of new databases coming from Agents or AI tools. Turso's architecture allows a single server to manage millions of databases, loading them when needed and pausing them when not in use, making it suitable for large numbers of small, on-demand Agent tasks.

The two companies will not merge their products directly for now. Supabase will continue developing around Postgres, while Turso will continue building SQLite. Existing databases,API and workflows will remain unchanged, and Turso Database will remain open source. The two sides will gradually connect their products, allowing small Agent tasks to use Turso first and then move into Supabase's Postgres system as requirements grow.

Turso founder Glauber Costa will join Supabase to lead Agent-related services. The acquisition price was not disclosed.
