Bitcoin Core Adjusting the vulnerability disclosure strategy to accelerate AI the remediation and disclosure of discoverable vulnerabilities
BlockBeats reports that October 23, the core software run by most nodes on the Bitcoin network,Bitcoin Core will adjust its vulnerability disclosure strategy. On Thursday, project maintainers merged a security policy change: if a vulnerability can be rediscovered by AI tools, the team will no longer set aside the related remediation work for months before disclosing it, as it did in the past.
Previously,Bitcoin Core classified all reported security vulnerabilities by severity and scheduled disclosure accordingly. Low-severity vulnerabilities would be disclosed 2 weeks after the next major version was released; medium- and high-severity vulnerabilities would remain confidential until 2 weeks after the last affected version reached end of maintenance.
The rationale for this mechanism was that quietly releasing a patch first and publishing vulnerability details later could prevent attackers from learning about system vulnerabilities before users running Bitcoin nodes completed their upgrades. Bitcoin nodes validate and relay every Bitcoin transaction. However, these rules were based on the premise that discovering vulnerabilities required specialized skills. As AI tools have become increasingly widespread, vulnerability discovery methods have changed, putting the original mechanism under pressure.Bitcoin Core will adopt rapid disclosure and remediation measures for vulnerabilities that can be discovered by entering a simple prompt into an artificial intelligence model, replacing vulnerability confidentiality periods that could previously last about 1 years. Maintainers said the adjustment will accelerate remediation of vulnerabilities that are easy to rediscover, but the related updates may not receive the same level of testing before being released to users. The policy adjustment comes as AI-assisted security vulnerability reports surge. Previously, a review of 390 Bitcoin projects identified 4,962 potential vulnerabilities, of which 85 were rated as critical vulnerabilities.
