Apollo Chief Economist Warns:AI Agents Could Trigger a “Slow-Motion Bank Run”

BlockBeats reports that September 28, Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok warned that as AI agents begin managing users’ funds, automatically transferring household cash from low-interest checking accounts to high-yield accounts, they could trigger a “slow-motion bank run.”

Slok said that the average interest rate on U.S. checking deposits is currently only about 0.1%, while institutions such as Revolut, SoFi, Varo, LendingClub, and Wealthfront offer annual deposit rates of approximately 3.3%to 5%. Based on a 10000 USD deposit, the former would generate approximately 10 USD in annual interest, while the latter could generate approximately 330 to 500 USD.

Slok believes that if AI agents are widely used to optimize household cash returns, banks could lose the funding source they rely on to issue loans based on low-cost deposits, creating potential risks to the financial system. Such AI agents can monitor account balances in real time, compare yields offered by different institutions, automatically transfer idle funds, and return the funds before bills come due.

In addition, the report noted that the crypto industry has begun building payment infrastructure for AI agents. The x402 protocol launched by Coinbase supports AI agents in using stablecoins to quickly pay for online services. Cumulative transaction volume has reached approximately 188000000 to 205000000 transactions, with approximately 69000 active agents.
