【U.S. SEC SEC commissioner Hester Peirce is about to leave office, saying that U.S. crypto regulation started too late and the industry has paid the price】

U.S.SEC Republican commissioner Hester Peirce will October 2 leave office, ending a nearly -year term. During her tenure, she advanced a crypto task force, innovation exemptions, and clarification of staking rules, and repeatedly criticized SEC’s enforcement approach to unregistered activities. In an interview with The Block, she said her greatest regret was that the United States did not establish a crypto regulatory framework sooner, leaving the industry mired in unnecessary regulatory and enforcement confrontations for years. Efforts should instead have focused on constructive rules that protect both investors and developers while leaving bad actors nowhere to hide. She warned that the consequences of long-term regulatory failures could persist for years and affect a broad range of stakeholders. Unfinished regulatory priorities also include developer protection, financial surveillance reform, and defining intermediaries. She stressed that genuinely decentralized projects should not be regulated as though they have intermediaries, but where intermediaries exist, that reality must be addressed honestly; users who choose self-custody must also bear the risks themselves.
