Developer recreates Adobe applications with Claude; all are open source but still far from mature
Beating AI breaking news: ArtCraft founder Brandon Thomas, using Claude Opus 5.5, open-sourced 7 Adobe creative software alternatives. All were written Rust from scratch, namely: 1. PhotoCraft: comparable to Photoshop, for image editing 2. VectorCraft: comparable to Illustrator, for vector design 3. FilmCraft: comparable to Premiere Pro, for video editing 4. LightCraft: comparable to Lightroom, for photo management and color grading 5. EffectCraft: comparable to After Effects, for video effects and animation 6. DesignCraft: comparable to InDesign, for publication layout 7. PdfCraft: comparable to Acrobat Pro, for PDF editing and processing
This software suite is entirely free and open source, developed for macOS, Windows, Linux, and browsers. It seeks to replicate Adobe's interfaces, tools, and keyboard shortcuts, and can also connect to MCP via AI Agent, allowing tools such as Claude to directly operate the software and modify files.
However, these applications are still at an early stage. Although PhotoCraft covers all of Photoshop's menu commands, the official statement acknowledges that its actual feature parity with Photoshop remains far below 50%. Testing found that basic background removal and color grading are already usable, but operations such as Free Transform remain unstable. Many Hacker News users have also reported missing features and operational issues.
Thomas initially claimed that feature parity with Adobe would be achieved within 1 months, then revised this to say that near-complete functionality could take several months. He acknowledged that the software is still far from mature, hopes the community will participate in fixing it, and plans to offer bug bounties.
